Tributes have been paid to cuts guy Benny King after he passed out at the age 78.
A notable figure in Scottish boxing for several years, King firstly worked the corner for a trainer and then became a cuts guy for a long list of boxers, such as Craig Docherty, Kevin Anderson Jawaid Khaliq, Tony Dodson, Mark Hobson, James Hare and Kris Carslaw.
Promoter and manager Tommy Gilmour praised this Greenock man, his friends faithful service and dedication.
Hes been my pal for 40-odd decades, said Gilmour. All of the places I went in the planet, Benny came along with me.
There has been a great deal of memorable nights. Craig Docherty got seriously cut and he has retained fighters. He had been always respected, whichever side of the fence he worked for.
His loyalty was beyond question, I think that has been one of his strongest points. He was so loyal to the rest of my family along with me, you couldnt have wished for a colleague, or a friend.
We all took him all over the world together with usand he always kept everybody together, and the fighters adored him. He gained everyones respect in addition to their friendship
Gilmour revealed how King abilities were utilised during a traffic crash.
We can see this lorry turning , got out of their car, and Benny at the point, he had had a great deal of trouble with his back, but the adrenaline must have been pumping.
He jumped up onto the cottage, captured the fella out. He had a cut eye and Benny saysGo and receive my cut equipment out. Benny patched the guy up at the side of the road until the ambulance came.
Ring Announcer Craig Stephen recalled how Kings calm schooling as a cornerman assisted Kevin Anderson to a name win over Young Mutley at 2006.
Benny told it was, said Stephen. Kevin Anderson from Young Mutley, I wasnt working the struggle, but I had been there and very near the corner. Kevin had been in trouble, however, Benny was cool in the corner always.
Kevin looked up and movedhes broke my teeth, and Benny only looked at him and saidI will get you a brand new one and got on with it. He kept him going and Kevin finally stopped Young Mutley.
Billy Nelson, whos coached a range of Scotlands most prosperous fighters, hailed Kings professionalism.
Benny has been a favorite and calm man. He had time for everybody, from amateurs to world champions.
A wealth of understanding of boxing. Only an all-round nice guy. You knew you had a good, reliable man working on your cornerif he was doing your cuts, and he gave you good advice after the struggle.
Fellow coach Colin Belshaw also profited in the words of King, who passed his experience before bowing from the game.
He worked with Kris Carslaw and myself at the British title battle against Brian Rose, said Belshaw. Kris had a horrible cut on and Benny maintained that together from the third until the 12th round.
He talked me through, helped me to do cuts myselfand I moved on to operate in that area.
I think hell go down as an iconic name, a real legend. He put an awful lot of his entire life into boxing
